How to determine which Thule Thru Axle Adapter you require to attach your Chariot to your bike

Does your bike have a Rear Thru-Axle or Rear Quick Relase Skewer

Modern mountain bikes now use what is referred to as a Thru-Axle to attach the rear wheel to the bike. Rear thru-axles are inserted through a hollow hub axle, are 12mm in diameter, and screw into closed dropouts. Depending on the hub spacing on the bike and the thickness of each drop out the over length of the thru-axle will vary.

Quick release (QR) rear skewers are still commonly used on cheaper mountain bikes, older mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and road bikes. If your bike is equipped with a quick release rear skewer the frame of your bike will have slotted dropouts. The hub axle, which is typically 9mm in diameter and 135mm wide rested in the slotted dropouts while a thin (5mm) QR skewer was then slid through the hollow axle to clamp everything in place.

Your Chariot will fit QR Skewers right out of the box

When you purchase a Thule Chariot it will include the bike arm, a steel cup, and a longer quick release skewer. If your bike is equipped with a quick release rear skewer you will simply remove your skewer and install the longer one which comes with the Chariot along with the included steel cup. Make sure axle is properly seated within the dropouts of your frame and make sure the QR skewer is properly tightened. Once the steel cup is attached you can attach the bike arm to the Chariot and then to your bike. You are now ready to ride.

Attaching a Chariot to a bike equipped with a Rear Thru-Axle

If your bike is equipped with a rear thru-axle you will need to purchase a Thule Thru-Axle Adapter prior to connecting the Chariot to your bike. Thule manufactures a wide range of thru-axle adapters to allow compatibility with the common thru-axles that come with modern mountain bikes.

Thru-Axles will vary in overall length, thread pitch, bolt head styles, and of course brand. Keep in mind that the brand of your thru-axle generally won't be the same as the brand of your bike.

Information needed to determine which adapter is required

To determine which model of Thule Thru-Axle Adapter you require, the following information will be required. The best way to obtain this information is to remove your thru-axle from your bike. Once the thru-axle has been removed, most of the information will be labeled along the axle. If the information is not listed on the axle you will need to use a tape measure to measure the overall length. If you are unsure you can always bring your bike or your thru-axle by one of our Edmonton store locations.

  1. Brand of the thru-axle
  2. Diameter of the thru-axle
  3. Length of the thru-axle
  4. Geometry of the thru-axle (straight or coned)
  5. Thread pitch of the thru-axle

Once you have obtained the above information you can use the charts below to determine which Thule Thru Axle Adapter is required.

Start by finding the chart which matches your brand of axle.

Then move to the Min-Max Length Column and find an adapter that is suitable for the length of your thru-axle. We have also included a column for the overall length of the adapter. This measurement will be longer than your axle as it includes the portion of the adapter which will be used to attach the steel cup included with your Chariot.

Next, confirm that the thread pitch on your axle matches the thread-pitch on the adapter.

You can then click on the part # to be taken to the product you will need to purchase.
